English Premier League Gameweek 38 Preview

So, here we go. This is why we all love football. Two to get relegated from five teams all within one point of each other, four of them with extremely closely matched goal difference, and the two of them on the highest points tally having to play each other, not knowing whether a convenient draw will actually only be convenient to relegate one or both of them. Sunday promises to be one of those days that really lives up to the hysteria whipped up on too many occasions by Sky, and all of a sudden a trip to Old Trafford for a one-off do-or-die encounter doesn't seem like such an obvious home win. A home banker against fellow relegation strugglers when you have just recorded consecutive 3-1 wins suddenly becomes a nerve-ridden fixture fraught with danger. Neutrals will love every second of it. Fans of the sides involved will experience either the best or worst that supporting a team has to offer, and some will endure both. I can't wait.

English Premier League Gameweek 37 Preview

With the Premier League title now decided, we can concentrate on the far more thrilling and entertaining battle to avoid relegation, and also the Football League playoffs that regularly provide a compelling end to the campaign. The return of QPR and Norwich to the top flight next season, added to the possible return of Nottingham Forest via the playoffs takes my thoughts back to the late 80s and early 90s, when all three were regulars in the top flight, but it may be some time before we see Rangers regain their position from that era as the top London club, or Norwich beating Bayern Munich in European competition, but with all three clubs having sunk as low as League One in recent seasons, their fortunes really sum up the joy and pain most of us experience following our favourite teams, rather than the hordes of glory-seekers who ally themselves to the club experiencing most success at present, and for whom a relegation is the cue to jump ship and claim to have supported Chelsea as man and boy.

English Premier League Gameweek 36 Preview

OK, I'm starting to get rather hacked off now. My run of missing out on accumulator payouts by just one result is reaching ridiculous proportions, and last weekend's five selections were let down by Livingston's inexplicable inability to put paid to a Dumbarton side they had defeated three times already earlier in the season. At least my suggestion to back a 3-0 win for Liverpool at odds of 23/2 somewhat made up for the accumulator's downfall. As the coming weekend is the last for the Football League this season, opportunites are obviously limited from now on, but I'll have another go following a look at the coming weekend's Premier League fixtures:
